NUESTRA BECARIA DEL MES

Os presentamos este mes a Abigail Hartshorn, quien fuera alumna del IES Victoria Kent y, tras conocer Suecia en su curso Erasmus, decidió volver allá y se encuentra cursando un máster en Gotemburgo.

Mi nombre es Abigail Hartshorn Guerrero y fui una de las becadas de la promoción 2016-2017. Hace casi dos años me gradué como periodista por la Universidad de Málaga y actualmente vivo en Gotemburgo (Suecia).

Siendo completamente honesta nunca he sabido a ciencia cierta a qué dedicarme, desde bien pequeña he sido muy curiosa  y me interesaban tanto las letras como las ciencias. Hice el Bachillerato de Ciencias Puras porque me brindaba más oportunidades de elección y porque en aquel entonces me encantaban las asignaturas de física y química. Recuerdo esos años con nostalgia. En 2016 la Asociación de Mujeres Universitarias de Marbella, con la que estoy ampliamente agradecida, me concedió una de las becas para estudiar la carrera de química en la Universidad de Málaga, grado que pensaba que me gustaría lo suficiente como para dedicarle el resto de mi vida académica y profesional a ella. Pero andaba equivocada, tras unos meses estudiando este grado me dí cuenta de que no era el camino “correcto”, si es que existe tal concepto. Tras unos meses un poco indecisa y algo enfadada conmigo misma, decidí presentarme nuevamente a Selectividad para poder empezar a estudiar en 2017 el grado de periodismo. Mucha gente se quedó asombrada por este cambio tan drástico, pero quería estudiar una carrera que no me restringiera demasiado a lo que poder dedicarme en el futuro y que además me permitiera tanto viajar como aprender de muchos ámbitos distintos del conocimiento.

Durante la carrera conocí a gente maravillosa, me involucré en representación estudiantil y además, tuve la oportunidad de irme en mi tercer año de Erasmus a la ciudad sueca de Gotemburgo, municipio donde llevo viviendo casi 2 años desde que terminé la carrera en 2021. A todas aquellas personas que estén leyendo esto y se estén planteando si irse o no de Erasmus, yo diría que todo aquel que se lo pueda permitir que lo haga. Es una experiencia inolvidable sin duda alguna.

Como he mencionado anteriormente en 2021 volví a aquella ciudad norteña, donde pocas veces sale el sol y donde llueve mucho. No voy a engañar a nadie, emigrar es complicado y más aún sin saber el idioma, pero poco a poco te vas integrando y vas aprendiendo más y más de la cultura, las costumbres y sobre todo el idioma. Y, es más, si hay suerte en unos meses voy a empezar un máster en Estudios Globales o en Periodismo de Investigación en la Universidad de Gotemburgo para así tener más oportunidades de dedicarme a algo relacionado con mi carrera.

This month we would like to introduce you to Abigail Hartshorn, who was a student at IES Victoria Kent and, after getting to know Sweden on her Erasmus course, decided to return there and is now studying a Master's degree in Gothenburg.

My name is Abigail Hartshorn Guerrero and I was one of the scholarship recipients of the class of 2016-2017. Almost two years ago I graduated as a journalist from the University of Málaga, and I am currently living in Gothenburg (Sweden).

To be completely honest, I have never known for sure what I would do for a living, since I was very young, I have been very curious and I was interested in both literature and science. I did the pure science baccalaureate because it gave me more choice and because I loved physics and chemistry at the time. I remember those years with nostalgia. In 2016 the Marbella University Women's Association, to which I am very grateful, awarded me one of the scholarships to study chemistry at the University of Malaga, a degree that I thought I would love enough to dedicate the rest of my academic and professional life to it. But I was wrong, after a few months studying this degree, I realized that it was not the "right" path, if such a concept exists. After a few months of being a bit indecisive and a bit angry with myself, I decided to take the Selectividad again so that I could start studying the journalism degree in 2017. Many people were shocked by this drastic change, but I wanted to study a degree that would not restrict me too much to what I could dedicate myself to in the future and that would also allow me to travel and learn about many different fields of knowledge.

During my degree I met wonderful people, I got involved in student representation and I also had the opportunity to go on my third year of Erasmus to the Swedish city of Gothenburg, where I have been living for almost 2 years since I finished my degree in 2021. To all those people who are reading this and are considering whether to go on Erasmus, I would say that anyone who can afford it should do it. It is an unforgettable experience without a doubt.

As I mentioned before, in 2021 I went back to that northern city, where the sun rarely comes out and where it rains a lot. I'm not going to fool anyone, emigrating is complicated and even more so without knowing the language, but little by little you integrate, and you learn more and more about the culture, the customs and above all the language. And, what's more, if I'm lucky, in a few months I'm going to start a master's degree in Global Studies or Investigative Journalism at the University of Gothenburg so that I have more opportunities to dedicate myself to something related to my career.
